Summary of Effective Practices

This section of the wiki presents a summary of effective practices in creating, strenthening or maintaining safe and caring schools.

Five broad strategies are suggested for discussion in this wiki. There are several specific practices that are suggested within each of these five broad strategies. We have prepared pages on each of those practices.

For each of these practices, we have listed local examples (with contact info) or published programs (with evaluation and ordering information) that illustrate how the effective practice has been implemented.

Please go to our Table of Contents to see how we have organized the content.

Contributors are invited to amend, delete, update or add to each of those pages. Also please add links to other web sites/pages, reports or journal articles that discuss illustrate that practice. As well, you can upload your own documents, case studies, data or other relevant information.

We also encourage contributors to add discussion questions or respond to the questions already posted at the bottom of each page. You can do that wihin the text of the page or by adding a "comment" using that feature of this wiki web site.

This wiki presents and discusses how schools can prevent criminal and anti-social behaviours and promote positive youth development. Our goal is to summarize the knowledge gained by experience or research while identifying, describing and discussing the programs and practices that can be implemented and sustained. We invite practitioners, administrators, government officials and researchers to participate in this dialogue.

The comprehensive approach that is suggested throughout this wiki is best illustrated by a diagram published by the Canadian Public Health Association (2006). This approach suggests that we recognize the links between positive and negative social behaviours such as character, community service, crime, bullying, mental health, social and emotional development. It suggests that schools, agencies, parents and communities need to coordinate an array of programs and services in order to create safe & caring schools.

This comprehensive approach also needs to recognize that the core of a safe & caring school is good teaching and students learning skills and knowledge that will prepare them for work and life. While we must address the behavioural problems and challenges faced by youth, we must do so in a way that respects the fact that educational achievement is the essential mandate of schools.
